Apparently, I Give Good Advice

Here's a mildly amusing tale of teh interwebs:

Sometimes I read this online sex/relationship advice columnist named Dan Savage, because there's some amusingly racy stuff in there occasionally and his answers are often funny and truthful.

A few weeks ago a guy wrote in to Dan with an issue about no longer being attracted to his boyfriend, whom he loved in every other way but physically. Dan's advice in a nutshell was to leave the relationship for a number of reasons. I didn't really think this was the best possible overall advice and decided to write in with some of my own. Here's what I sent to Dan:

I was somewhat annoyed at your response to the Seeking A Solution guy who was no longer attracted to his partner. How about telling the partner that he no longer finds him attractive, considering that this guy is great in other areas? Being honest? It is quite possible that the partner has no idea that his out-of-shapeness is a turnoff, especially if he has never been told! Now, if he is confronted with the problem and then refuses to work out, eat less, etc. at least he understands why he's being dumped and has had a fair chance to either do or not do something about it - or he might even decide that he would rather be with a partner who accepts him the way he is.
- Been Dumped For Physical Imperfection

I didn't really expect this to be published or even read. But it turns out both happened - kind of, anyway. Today I went to the column and saw that there was a husband in a very similar situation with his wife, i.e. she was becoming unattractive to him. So does Dan tell this guy to dump her, as he did the other fellow? No, he followed MY advice that I sent in. How do I know this? Not only is what I wrote pretty much paraphrased, one line is lifted nearly EXACTLY:

I wrote: "It is quite possible that the partner has no idea that his out-of-shapeness is a turnoff, especially if he has never been told!"

Dan wrote: "It is quite possible that she has no idea that her out-of-shapeness is a turnoff, especially if she has never been told!"

Well well well. I guess I could be an advice columnist.

Read what Dan wrote (following my advice) here.

I read it. If I were you, I'd send him a bill.
